Built in 1849, the museum used to be an underground railroad site and played a significant role in the first bloodshed of the Civil War -- the Pratt Street Riot. In fact, guided tours of the route of the 6th Massachusetts regiment (soldiers who were attacked by angry civilians causing the first deaths of the Civil War) are offered at 1pm on weekends. This is one of the city's newest museums and it offers an interesting historical perspective of the violence and tension caused by the town's mixed loyalties during the War (for Baltimore lies just south of the Mason-Dixon line). The museum will educate visitors of all ages with fascinating exhibits depicting pivotal events during this turbulent era of American history. Located on the eastern side of the Harbor, the Civil War Museum can be easily reached by private vehicle.
