In the 1760s, Edward Fell laid out the maritime community, Fell's Point, and sold individual plots at the request of a young merchant named Robert Long. Then, in 1765, Robert Long built what is now the oldest surviving urban residence in Baltimore. Located a block from the docks in Fell's Point, the house has been authentically restored to its colonial appearance and is furnished with antiques and furniture that date back to the pre-Revolutionary period. The house was restored by the Society for the Preservation of Federal Hill and Fell's Point. Here, visitors can get a sense of the life and labors of 18th century merchants. Also, attached to the house is an L-shaped garden that is designed, planted, and cared for in the manner of the 18th century. The garden won the Governor's Beautification Award in 1990 and serves a specifically utilitarian purpose -- growing food seasonings, medicines, fabric dyes, and scents.
